ABANDON Australia’s bid for a UN Security Council seat

“ABANDON Australia’s bid for a seat on the United Nations Security Council.”

Active verb

ABANDON is orange in Ellie’s edition. It appears 3 times in the list.

In plain English

Withdraw Australia’s campaign for an elected 2013–14 seat on the UN Security Council.

What happened?

Australia did not abandon the bid. It was elected and served during 2013–14. The Coalition government continued the term after September 2013. Julie Bishop later cited sanctions work, Syrian humanitarian access and the international response to MH17.

Current policy record

Australia is campaigning for a 2029–30 Security Council seat, with the election scheduled for June 2028. This revives the same underlying policy choice; the current government’s position is the opposite of the IPA proposal.

Evidence status

The proposal, Australia’s 2013–14 membership and current 2029–30 candidacy are confirmed by primary sources.
