ABOLISH the Department of Climate Change

IPA MANIFESTO · PROPOSAL 2

ABOLISH the Department of Climate Change

“ABOLISH the Department of Climate Change.”

Active verb

ABOLISH is red in Ellie’s edition. It appears 17 times—the most frequent command in the list.

In plain English

Eliminate the dedicated federal climate department. Abolishing a department does not necessarily end its work: responsibilities and staff can be transferred elsewhere.

What happened?

The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency was merged into the industry portfolio in March 2013 under the Gillard Labor government, before Tony Abbott became prime minister. The Abbott government made further changes to climate responsibilities after September 2013. The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water was established in July 2022.

Current policy record

One Nation currently proposes abolishing the Department of Climate Change and related agencies, programs and regulations. That is a direct policy overlap. Its claimed $30 billion annual saving is a party estimate and is not independently verified here.

Evidence status

The original IPA proposal and the March 2013 Gillard government merger are confirmed. Later Abbott government climate-policy changes must be distinguished from the earlier departmental abolition. Similarity does not demonstrate IPA influence.
